People will do almost anything to cover up their mistakes and avoid the consquences of their actions. Even destroy the lives of innocent people.

Life Skill:
Understand evil. Knowing how easily certain people will hurt others in an effort to up their mistakes.
Knowledge of the tactics and strategies they will use.

Critical Thinking:
Why would this woman lie? What would motivate the police to lie?
Where there any witnesses? Anyone else who knew?

Moving forward... what could be done to prevent this in the future?

Don't always just accept what people tell you.
